Glaucoma Referral Refinement
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases in which the optic nerve (which connects your eye to your brain) is damaged by the pressure of the fluid inside your eye. This may be because the fluid is higher than normal, or because the nerve is more susceptible to damage from pressure. This may effect one or both eyes.
Because you often cannot feel the pressure, and the damage happens slowly, you may not know you have glaucoma until a lot of damage is done. At The Eyeworks we routinely check for Glaucoma in all over 40’s using a combination of analytical tools.
If the Pressure within the eye appears over 21mmHg, or the Fields of View (your peripheral vision) appear to be problematic, then under Wirral’s Glaucoma Referral Refinement scheme, we can double check these initial measurements to see if further investigation is really required.
Previously any pressure reading over 21mmHg had to go to hospital for further investigation. This was frequently a waste of time and resources, as often it was a one off high reading and nothing actually wrong. Hence the refinement scheme was established to be carried out in community practice leaving a lot less stress for the patient.
This scheme of refinement has saved a lot of time and resources since its introduction.
